Tony Dorsett H.O.F.
On December 18, 2009, Dallas is Love was proud to partner up with Former Dallas Cowboy Tony Dorsett. That morning, Tania and Patrick arrived at an Army Recruiting Office in Plano, Texas, to meet up with a photojournalist from the Dallas Morning News Neighbors section. Tania and Patrick brought plenty of merchandise and goods, to get the day started for the soldiers that were there. They decided to have a little fun drawing game to hand out the merchandise. The soldiers had a great time with this because they were appreciative of any sort of gift they could get and as one soldier put it; “It doesn’t matter what we get, it matters who gets it. It’s always in the spirit of competition.” The drawing game kept their full attention because they always wondered who was going to get what and see if they could beat out their comrades in a funny way. The little drawing prizes ranged from a home design kit to portable canes. On the arrival of the guest of honor, Tony Dorsett, the soldiers were thrilled to be able to meet yet another Dallas Cowboy legend that supports Dallas is Love. Dorsett has such a great charisma to him as he greeted each and every one of the soldiers and he thanked them dearly for the sacrifices they make for our country. It was great to watch him as he was willing to take any picture or autograph anything on request for the troops. Every soldier was excited to see him and get to talk to him for a bit. A few soldiers even asked for him to sign an Army hat or something else for their friends stationed overseas in Iraq, and he was certainly pleased to do so. Tony also signed a few footballs for the wounded warriors at Landstuhl Regional Hospital in Germany, and wished them the best recoveries. After several pictures were taken by the soldiers and by Neighbors, the event came to an end. Once more, Dorsett thanked them for everything they do for our nation and his sincerity was quite contagious because he made each person in that room feel acknowledged and appreciated. We at Dallas is Love would like to thank Tony Dorsett for coming out that day to make several troops’ days as well as ours!

1st Lt. Danny Charles with some of his Troops in Iraq
Dallas Morning News/NeighborsGo, December 4, 2009
1st Lt. Danny Charles front, joins some of his fellow soldiers while serving in Iraq.
Sachse-based organization Dallas Is Love reaches out to service-men and women across the globe to help offer them a little bit of care from their home country.
Gift cards, letters and e-mails are just some of the ways the nonprofit lends a hand to those serving overseas.
Neighborsgo caught up with 1st.Lt. Danny Charles, who is currently stationed in Iraq. He and his platoon have received some of Dallas Is Love’s gifts in the past.
What do you miss about the States?
My wife, my car and "normal" weather.
What’s the hardest part about being gone during the holidays?
The holiday atmosphere is never present. It’s just another day.
Most welcome news you guys get overseas?
We actually stay pretty up-to-date on current events in Balad, Iraq, but I
haven't heard much good news lately.
What do soldiers serving overseas want most?
Junk food is always popular; gift cards and phone cards are very welcome also.
Tell us about Dallas Is Love and the work they have
done with your platoon.
DIL is an organization set up by Linda Foster’s two children to sponsor soldiers
currently deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I found DIL on a Web page that gave sponsor organization information. I wrote to
them and they were very generous in supporting my platoon and a good portion of
my company by providing gift cards and other care package items within a matter
of a few short weeks.
How much help has Dallas Is Love been for your guys?
They have been instrumental. I have been working on finding sponsors for my
company to try and make sure the soldiers receive some sort of care package on a
monthly basis. They provided quite a few items in one big shipment and made the
day for many of my soldiers.
Just for fun: Cowboys or Mavericks?
I actually don't watch football, but seeing that I am from Rhode Island I
would have to say the Patriots.
